Analytical and critical thinker with multilingual ability and excellent creative skills.
This is a selected collection of the most relevant academic works in the field of my studies in Communications and Business Administration at John Cabot University in Rome.
During my B.A., I have broaden my educational horizons, by analyzing in depth film criticism, digital ethnography, cybersecurity, Italian-made cosmetics and sustainable tourism industries.
BLACK MIRROR: "USS CALLISTER" (2017)
In COM 311 “Digital Media Culture” class, I analyzed “USS Callister” the first episode of series four from Black Mirror (2017) on Netflix applying the concept of power related to the use of modern technologies and virtual spaces, in the shift from real-life to virtual identities.
THE LOBSTER (2015)
In COM 470 “Advanced Media Theory” class, I used as a critique the theory of Michael Foucault’s Discipline and Punish: The Birth of the Prison and The History of Sexuality in the analysis of Yorgos Lanthimos’s The Lobster (2015).
Applying Foucault’s theory to the movie provides a critique of contemporary Western society in relation to surveillance, discipline and control.
All the elements of the theory are in line with the identity of the characters and the structure of power in which they live: instead of love, this world focuses on compatibilities.
BETWEEN DIGITAL AND PHYSICAL: THE STUXNET CYBERWEAPON
In CMS/BUS 385 “Surveillance, Privacy and Social Identities: Practices and Representations”, I discussed how Stuxnet relates to contemporary surveillance in international conflicts and the way in which it bridges the physical and the digital realm applying Jussi Parikka’s theory of the self-reproductive nature of the worm, acting as a biological system in relation to the contemporary evolutionary idea of capitalism discussed in Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari in Anti-oedipus: Capitalism and Schizophrenia (1983).
Ugly Wudi and Ugly Betty
In CMS 333 “TV after TV: Global Industry Practices, Formats and Style” class, I analyzed Ugly Betty (2006-2010) as the first example of successful tv series format in the US and worldwide, by comparing the American version to the Chinese Ugly Wudi (2008-2009), examining the impact of these series on the audience, through the reception and promotion of the show and its social media role.
THE WORLD OF ATTRACTIONS IN CLÉO DE 5 À 7 (1961) AND IL POSTO (1962)
In the “Cinema and The City” class at the American University of Paris (AUP), I wrote the paper “The World of Attractions in Cléo de 5 à 7 and Il Posto”, comparing the main characters of Cléo de 5 à 7 (1962) directed by Agnès Varda, and Il Posto (1961) directed by Ermanno Olmi, focusing my attention on the relationship between gender and space, as well as the protagonist’s experience of being flâneuristic in the city.
CELEBRITIES AND INSTAGRAM: A DIGITAL ETHNOGRAPHY ON CHIARA FERRAGNI’S PROFILE
In the “Media and Ethnography” class at the American University of Paris (AUP), I wrote a digital ethnography on Chiara Ferragni’s Instagram profile, analyzing how the Italian influencer portrays femininity on Instagram and the relationship she creates with her followers as a fan community. I focused my attention on her Instagram page during 72 hours of activity and I selected 5 posts for the relevance of the content and the number of comments.
CASTAING-TAYLOR AND GARDNER: A REVOLUTION IN VISUAL ANTHROPOLOGY
In this paper, I compared two ethnographic documentaries Sweetgrass (2009) by Lucien Castaing-Taylor and Dead Birds (1963) by Robert Gardner applying Berger’s theory of ambiguity and the concept of participant observation in Schwartz.
The Right to the City in Do The Right Thing
In COM 480 "Senior Capstone Project" class, I analyzed the right to the city theory from Lefebvre and Harvey perspective as represented in Spike Lee’s Do The Right Thing.
The purpose of this paper is to discuss the research design, the theoretical framework and the cinematic techniques used to determine who has the right to the city through the appropriation of space and art-media by applying semiotic, critical discourse, narrative and aesthetic analyses to Do The Right Thing.
THE CULTURE OF WEDDING: NIGERIA VS CANADA
Wedding, as a ceremony, differs between Nigerian and Canadian culture. The Wedding Party (2016), directed by Kemi Adetiba, and Christmas Wedding Planner (2017), directed by Justin G. Dyck, are two comic-romantic drama films featuring the stories of two wedding planners, Wonu (Zainab Balogun) in Nigeria and Kelsey (Jocelyn Hudon) in Canada.
PAT MCGRATH LABS: CASE STUDY
In this project, my team and I analyzed Pat McGrath Labs' brand development, challenges and marketing strategies, evaluating the reasons for opening their stores in Italy.
From Sustainability to Responsibility: How the Green Gold Is Transforming the Environment
This case study was part of an in-class debate for Business Ethics on mass tourism industry and environmental sustainability practices in today businesses.
I analyzed the relationship between the global tourism and travel industry representatives, promoting globalization and free trade, and the anti-globalization or “fair trade” movement, defending locally owned businesses, arguing for Honey’s analysis of “greenwashing” the “mass” and “ethical” tourism, Dickinson’s “slow travel” versus “fast travel,” while I critically evaluated Henderson’s business argument for “sustainability”, Lansing and De Vries’s “marketing ploy”, Butcher’s “defense of masses”, and Rutty’s explanation of the reasons behind the “suitable economic development of tourism sector.”
