THE CULTURE OF WEDDING: NIGERIA VS CANADA

Wedding, as a ceremony, differs between Nigerian and Canadian cultureThe Wedding Party (2016), directed by Kemi Adetiba, and Christmas Wedding Planner (2017), directed by Justin G. Dyck, are two comic-romantic drama films featuring the stories of two wedding planners, Wonu (Zainab Balogun) in Nigeria and Kelsey (Jocelyn Hudon) in Canada.

I comparatively applied Geert Hofstede’s set of value dimensions to the narrative elements of both films. In the second part, I applied Edward Twitchell Hall’s categorization of high context and low context culture to Nigerian and Canadian communication styles, including the differences in social scripts and the relationship between characters. Indeed, I addressed how the two cultures could handle culture conflicts differently.
