THE LOBSTER (2015)

MICHAEL FOUCAULT’S DISCIPLINE AND PUNISH: THE BIRTH OF THE PRISON AND THE HISTORY OF SEXUALITY USED AS CRITIQUE IN YORGOS LANTHIMOS’S THE LOBSTER (2015)

In COM 470 “Advanced Media Theory” class, I used as a critique the theory of Michael Foucault’s Discipline and Punish: The Birth of the Prison and The History of Sexuality in the analysis of Yorgos Lanthimoss The Lobster (2015).

By applying Foucault’s theory to the movie, the paper provides a critique of contemporary Western society in relation to surveillance, discipline and control. All the elements of the theory are in line with the identity of the characters and the structure of power in which they live: instead of love, this world focuses on compatibilities.
