The Isabella Scelsi Foundation
The most active and vivid cultural institution is the Isabella Scelsi Foundation in Rome. Its historical location, located near the Palatine Hill (in via di San Teodoro 8), gives a unique context to the performative arts and culture in general. In fact, it was the house of Giacinto Scelsi, the classical composer, who spent there his last twenty years.
The preservation of the original intent, promoting music and art, is still alive in promoting collaborations and festivals with different and various international partners institutions, which includes the Goethe Institut Salvador-Bahia in Brazil, the Cambridge School of Art in the UK and the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome. I really appreciate the mission project of promoting and studying contemporary and classical music.
The co-presence of “Casa Scelsi Museum”, the main stage for music events, and the organization of workshops, seminars, master classes, represents a rare balance between privatizing the memory of one of the most famous Italian composers and keep up with today’s music. In fact, its uniqueness in the preservation and promotion of Giacinto Scelsi’s artistic and cultural legacy make the Foundation so special. Its additional value consists of providing counselling services concerning musical, scientific and publishing activities launched by many other institutions.
Moreover, The Scelsi Foundation publishes the biannual magazine “i suoni, le onde…”, available worldwide, featuring both scientific and academic content alongside news and information on the Foundation’s core activities. Although, the publication of magazines, monographs and the collections of articles aims to reach only a specific targeted audience, which restricts the possibilities of sharing the passion for music and extending the appreciation of the Opera to non-experts readers.
The Foundation gives the possibility to exceptional singers with a Conservatory diploma who intend to continue investing in their music career to improve their familiarity with contemporary music and towards Scelsi’s musical compositions. The scholarship is sponsored and funded by the Isabella Scelsi Foundation, with the collaboration and support of the Institute of Japanese Culture in Italy and the Association Nuova Consonanza in Rome. The jury is chaired by Mrs. Michiko Hirayama and made up of the President of the Isabella Scelsi Foundation, the President of Nuova Consonanza and the Director of the Institute of Japanese Culture in Italy.
The Isabella Scelsi Foundation is a precious heritage for the Eternal City, which should be treasured and publicised to the American Academic Institutions in Rome and worldwide.
